XL Catlin has launched new insurance solutions to support the media and entertainment industry.
The solutions are designed for organisers, performers, producers and support trades in the media and entertainment industry, and include one dedicated to film and television productions, and another to cover live performances and the companies involved in that sector.
XL Catlin is offering these insurance products on an annual or project-by-project basis, with cover specific to each area.
The insurer’s media and entertainment team formed in January. It’s led by John Young, underwriting manager for media and entertainment.
He has 19 years of experience in the London market, including 10 years specialising in media and entertainment underwriting. He joined XL Catlin from ProSight Specialty insurance, where he held the role of head of media.
Young said: “From the risk that a star actress gets injured on set, through to the theft of cameras or props, the exposures associated with making movies and TV programmes vary greatly from one project to the next. The same rings true for touring professionals and businesses associated with live events.”
He added: “This is why it’s important for those companies to partner with expert underwriters who have significant experience in this specialist area, and the global capability to support their projects, wherever they may have to shoot, set a stage or perform.”
Identifying the types of claims that XL Catlin’s new media and entertainment solutions will address in an explanatory article, Young pointed to the example of actor Harrison Ford, who suffered an injury when he reprised his role as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Ford suffered a fractured ankle when he was crushed by the door of the Millennium Falcon starship. Production was suspended for two weeks while he recovered.
Similarly, while playing the character of Achilles during the 2004 movie Troy, Brad Pitt ruptured his Achilles tendon after landing awkwardly. The injury kept him out of action for several weeks.
