Holidaymakers aged 50 and above are making nearly half of all leisure travel claims according to research from CEGA.
The travel claims, risk management and global assistance company has found that 46% of leisure travel insurance claims handled by the company in 2016 were made by the over-50s. It has also revealed that policyholders aged over 50 make fewer claims for medical expenses than their younger counterparts. 27% of claims from the demographic group related to medical costs compared to 31% from those aged under 50.
The other top causes of leisure travel claims from the over-50s in 2016 were holiday cancellation costs (38% of claims) and lost baggage or money (18%).
According to CEGA’s findings, Spain produced more leisure travel insurance claims from the over-50s in 2016 than any other country (24%), followed by the US and France, which each produced nearly 8% of claims. In contrast, corporate travel claims from the over 50s during the same period were more evenly distributed across the top three countries of origin, with the US producing 13% of corporate claims, Spain 12% and France 7%.
Just over 6% of both corporate and leisure claims from this age group originated in the UK.
