The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) has announced three new faces to its executive committee following its annual elections.
Oonagh McClure, managing partner at Thompsons NI, will represent Northern Ireland on APIL’s executive committee, while Michael Imperato will represent Wales. Suzanne Trask, a partner and head of the adult brain injury department at Bolt Burdon Kemp, has also been elected by the membership to complete the 16-strong committee.
McClure said that their appointments to the committee came at a crucial time as APIL fights to preserve access to justice for claimants.
“There have been lots of changes to how personal injury claims are dealt with and there are further changes ahead and now is the time to be involved to make sure we do as much as we can to protect the rights of injured people,” she said.
Imperato, partner at Watkins & Gunn Solicitors in Cardiff, specialising in injuries abroad, trade union-related and sports injury claims. He said that he was planning to “hit the ground running”.
“I will continue APIL’s good work in helping injured people seek the justice they need and to which they have a right,” he said.
They will join the committee which is headed by new president Brett Dixon. He is supported by Gordon Dalyell, as new vice president, from Digby Brown in Edinburgh.
At his inaugural speech as APIL’s president at the association’s annual general meeting, Dixon stressed that the underlying principle of all APIL’s campaign work was to achieve fairness for injured people and their families.
“I am committed to making people understand that the people who are confined to their homes, unable to look after themselves or their families could be any one of us and that they deserve to be treated fairly by society,” he said.
